Bountiful UT
Bountiful is a city in Davis County, Utah, located north of Salt Lake City, between the Wasatch Range and the Great Salt Lake. The community was formerly known as Sessions’ Settlement and was the second Mormon settlement in Utah (after Salt Lake City) (for Perrigrine Sessions, a Mormon pioneer who arrived in 1847). Bountiful, which was named after a mythical city in the Book of Mormon, changed its name in 1855.
The city’s population was 42,552 at the time of the 2010 census. During the late 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, the city flourished rapidly and was Davis County’s largest city until 1985, when it was surpassed by Layton. The city of Bountiful is the 15th largest in Utah.
It is a bedroom neighborhood for Salt Lake City and the surrounding area, while being part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. During rush hour, however, due to the extremely tight entrance into Salt Lake County, routes between the counties can reach near-gridlock traffic. The Legacy Parkway opened on September 13, 2008, and the FrontRunner commuter rail has been running since April 2008. These were built to ease traffic on Interstate 15 as it passes through the Bountiful area.
The city of Bountiful was named after one of the ancient American cities mentioned in the Book of Mormon. Soon after Mormon pioneers landed in the Salt Lake Valley, Bountiful was founded. Perrigrine Sessions had only been in the area for three days when he decided to investigate it. Sessions loaded his family onto their wagon and drove 300 head of cattle into the South Davis Valley in September 1847. Other families migrated into the area the following year and began cultivating crops. By 1850, 53 families had established farms in the area.
Bountiful was a tranquil farming village for more than four decades, but its proximity to Salt Lake City made it an excellent residential location for suburban commuters in the 1950s. Bountiful’s population more than doubled as families began to relocate from Salt Lake City to the outskirts. Its demographics changed as well, because many of the newcomers were professionals (doctors, lawyers, educators, and CEOs) who commuted to Salt Lake City for employment.
Bountiful is a 13.5-square-mile city that encompasses the zip codes 84010 and 84011. The city is a calm and safe valley with a close-knit group of people, shadowed by the adjacent Grandview Peak of the Wasatch Mountains. The various activities to do in town, as well as the convenient access to the main city, are popular among the locals.
Within the city limits of Bountiful, you’ll find a plethora of enjoyable activities to partake in. Outdoor excursions, such as Mueller Park Trailhead and Bonneville Shoreline Trail, where you can go hiking, mountain biking, and exploring what used to be the shoreline of the ancient Lake Bonneville, are some of the most enjoyable things to do. Creekside Park, with its enormous playground, beautiful foliage, and access to the neighboring Mill Creek, is one of the many intriguing neighborhood parks that dot the map.
